ServSafe Training & Fees

The Cape Girardeau County Food Code, adopted November 20, 2008, requires that all managers employed in food establishments in Cape Girardeau County possess a valid Food Management Certificate. This requirement will become mandatory on January 15, 2012.

ServSafe is a two day food safety training and certificate program. A ServSafe certificate is a basic credential for restaurant and food managers. The Cape Girardeau County Public Health Center will offer the ServSafe course at scheduled dates and times (immediately below).

Fees for the ServSafe Training are as follows:

  1. Fees for the two day course are:
    Course Fee $110.00
    Book Fee $60.00
    Total: $170.00

  2. To Proctor the test is $35.00 for the answer sheet and $30.00 for the first hour of the instructor’s time, plus $15.00 for each additional half hour of the instructor’s time, or any number of minutes thereafter.

Required Training

The Cape Girardeau County Food Code, adopted November 20, 2008 requires that all managers and food handler’s employed in food establishments in Cape Girardeau County be trained in food safety. This requirement will become mandatory on January 15, 2012.


The following people must possess a Basic Sanitation Food Card:

  • Shift leaders
  • Cooks
  • Food prep personnel
  • Anyone who has direct contact with food items

This requirement can be met by attending the Basic Sanitation Class, a two hour program offered by the Cape Girardeau County Public Health Center that covers safe food handing procedures. The FEE is $7.00 payable at the door. After completion of the 20 question exam, Food Cards will be issued. This class does not satisfy the owner/manager requirement of the Food Ordinance.

 

The following people must be certified in an advanced food safety course:

  • Managers and Assistant Managers
  • Owner(s) involved in the day to day operation of the facility
  • At least one person from absentee ownership (must own at least 5% of shares)

We offer ServSafe as an advanced food safety course.  ServSafe is a two day food safety training and certificate program.  A ServSafe Certificate is a basic credential required for restaurant and food managers.   The fee for this course is $110.00 due the first day of the course.

 

The following people are not required to obtain a Basic Sanitation Food Card:

The position requires the employee to handle food (not including drinks).  For example, a server who prepares salad or a bartender who cooks food would be required to obtain a food card.

  • Servers
  • Bartenders
  • Dishwashers
  • Cleaning crews
